Hello Year 6,
Thank you for coming back to school with such a fantastic work ethic and positive attitude towards all aspects of Year 6 life. I am looking forward to seeing you go from strength to strength as the year progresses.
Please spend time looking at the different sections of the Year 6 website. These will be updated regularly throughout the year and will be your first port of call with regards to what is going on in school.
The weekly timetable for the Autumn Term 2020-21 is uploaded onto the website, along with the Curriculum Map and Parent Planner for this half term. These two documents will tell you everything your child will be studying in school this half term.
PE sessions will take place on Wednesdays and Thursdays this term and will commence on Wednesday 10th September. Wednesday afternoon PE lessons will be cricket sessions delivered by Chance to Shine. Thursday afternoon PE lessons will be Hockey sessions delivered by Mr Walker. Children need to bring shin pads with them for this lesson please.
Homework can be found on the year 6 class pages - the children will be set 'Project' Homework for each half term. Please see the separate sheet that your child brings home with them during the second week, which explains the the homework project for the first half term. The children can also access any maths or English revision work they wish on the Year 6 class pages. They also must learn spellings and spelling patterns for weekly tests and continue to revise and learn arithmetic methods for regular arithmetic tests and 'Maths Ninja'.
As in previous year groups, the children can choose to bring home a school reading book or to read their own book from home or from the library. Reading books should be brought into school every day so that they can be used during quiet reading sessions. Please try to hear your child read at least twice a week. I encourage parents to find time to read to their child as well, as this time is extremely effective in developing the children's vocabulary. Children will also bring home a reading journal and I will expect that two activities are completed each week to the highest standard possible.
As a general point, it is really important that your child is now confident with all of their times tables up to 12 x 12. Please continue to work on these at home – focusing particularly on the division facts as well as the multiplication (i.e. children should know that 56 ÷ 8 = 7 as well as knowing that 8 x 7 = 56). If your child is confident with all of their times tables, please move on to practising all squared numbers 13 x 13 = 169, 14 x 14 = 196… etc).
Throughout the course of the year, I will be asking that each child prepares a short prayer service to lead to the class in Year 6 - either on their own or as a pair/small group. I will give children examples of these in the first few weeks back and will ensure that all children have sufficient advanced warning to ensure that they prepare a service that they feel proud of.
If you need any information or would like to meet with me about any matter, please contact me by email on firstname.lastname@example.org or by using the link below.
I look forward to working together with you and your child throughout Year 6.
